“I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.”
Those are the very words spoken by Jesus the Christ – a bold statement indeed! But what was he talking about?
On another occasion, Jesus stood and cried out:
“If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
The Bible explains that He spoke these words concerning the Spirit of the Living God.
On yet another occasion, He told a woman:
“Whoever drinks of [natural] water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
Is there anybody in their right mind who wouldn’t want everlasting life in right standing with the Creator of Heaven and Earth? In these statements, Jesus has invited us to just that! Do YOU ever get the sense that something is missing in your life? Jesus has you reading this for a reason and this invitation is for YOU!
The Bible calls that sin, and says we’ve all done it, whether outwardly, or in our hearts, whether something as grave as murder, or as “minor” as telling a lie. The Bible also says that the penalty for sin, for breaking God’s law, is being separated from God. For us, that separation means spending all of eternity in a terrible place devoid of anything good, a place of torment that was not created or intended for us, but is our destination by default for rejecting the light of God. Jesus explained it this way: “this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.” So the bad news is, because of our evil deeds, we all deserve the consequence of breaking God’s law.
BUT GOD ….
The Bible explains all of this in vivid wonderful detail, but the short of it is that Jesus came into this world for us, fully God by nature, who then became also fully man for our sake, lived the perfect sinless life that we never could to satisfy and fulfill all of God’s requirements, and then died the death of a wicked sinner by sacrificing Himself, for us, to be hanged on a cross. While He rose from the dead on the third day, victorious over sin and the grave, He died a sinner’s death as our substitute, to atone (or make full payment) for our sin, so that our sin-debt is now paid, IF we make the choice to now accept His invitation and surrender our lives to Him as we entrust Him with our lives here and in eternity. If we do that, His promise is to prepare an eternal place for us in Heaven:
“That where I am, there you may be also.”
"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
“If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.”
“Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come . . . .Without money and without price.”
“I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star. And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.”
Jesus also said: “Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” So what about YOU? Do YOU hear the Lord’s voice in your heart? If you hear the Lord Jesus calling you, if you feel him drawing you to Himself, the Bible says “harden not your heart.”
