“Dear Self”

// October 9th, 2009 // Lyrics and Details

Inspired by Sister Lee’s rhyme entitled “Letter to Self,” tb wrote a version of his own in 2006 that eventually developed into “Dear Self,” a song on the Eternal Life Music album.  tb ran across the beat while going through KinDeezil’s inventory and found that it was a perfect match for the rhyme he had written.  This song features a special outro: none other than Sister Lee doing a spoken word version of the original “Letter to Self.”

Lyrics:

(Verse 1)

Dear self, you know you come a long way man –

But keep holding on to God’s never changing hand –

You know where you been, you know the things you been through –

You know the kind of man you are when you leave it to you (4)

So dear self, keep leanin’ on the arm of the Lord –

call on the brothers and the sisters at the ‘Och for support –

Know if you focus your attention on just not getting’ caught –

You find yourself in isolation in your ways and your thoughts (8)

And dear self, that’s where the devil wants you to be –

Continue walking in the spirit and the fact that you free –

Continue settin’ your affections on pleasing the Lord –

and keep your focus on the moment you gon’ meet with the Lord (12)

And dear self, remember not to follow your friends –

If they aint living right you got to be a model for them –

This is meant to give you muscle in the struggle within –

So you should keep it when you need it we can read it again (16)

(A’ight)

(Verse 2)

Dear flesh, you lucky that you aint in a grave –

You a dead man walking and I made you a slave –

By the power of the Holy Ghost, peep what I wrote –

‘cause when I’m makin’ these decisions you don’t get no vote (4)

You get no rope to hang me with ‘cause I don’t trust you –

You got some people fooled but I know what you up to –

See when you get to talkin’ man I must interrupt you –

‘cause everything you say and you feel is corrupt too (8)

So peep it.  You the Indian I’m the chief now –

We bought with a price, this life’s the receipt now –

You would leave me empty but in Christ I’m complete now –

the sin that used to run you only lives in defeat now –

You eat now, and I don mean to be rude (12)

If I don’t get cooperation you don’t get no food –

It’s Christ that rules.  I hope that your appreciation’s greater –

You seem to be forgetful, man I’ll read this to you later (16)

(Keep your mouth shut)

(Verse 3)

Dear spirit, I promise i’ma plant that seed –

knowing that the Word of God is the food you need –

yo eat good, get big.  May you stay in the gym –

your prayer closet membership’s fully paid by the Friend (4)

who sticks closer than a brother yo the veil is ripped –

He got hit then stripped, spit, nails and whips –

His crew split. Skipped the anesthetic, not one sip –

and gripped the wrath of the Father after writing the script (8)

two nights in a crypt, vacation after taking the cross –

and all the shame written next to your name to take it off –

yeah He suffered the loss so that we could be made perfect –

let’s give Him his due, without you it’s fake worship (12)

“in spirit and truth” precisely what the Lord told me –

it’s grace at the throne, so we can enter in boldly –

just wanted to remind you of that, cause you my homey –

the spirit is willing keep me from acting like the old me (16)

(For real man).
