Does Christian Hip Hop Need a “Fresh Breath”?

Does Christian Rap/Holy Hip Hop really need a “fresh breath?” It really does. In this day and age, too often Christian artists look and sound like secular artists, and too often the heart behind Christian rap is no different than the heart behind secular rap. Too many artists are simply just trying to shine. Too many simply want to be seen and heard, when the fact is that pure Christianity is about Christ shining, Christ being seen and Christ being heard, because Christ alone is the way to eternal life. (John 14:6). Moreover, God calls Christians to be holy (1 Peter 1:15), godly and set apart from the world (Psalm 4:3), “having escaped the corruption that is in the world” (2 Peter 1:4).

There must be a difference between the sacred and the secular, and that is where supposed to be Holy Hip Hop is losing its savor, replacing it with “swagger.” We believe Ezekiel 22:26 is directly on point with respect to Holy Hip Hop to a significant extent. There, God said: “Her priests have done violence to my law and have profaned my holy things. They have made no distinction between the holy and the common, neither have they taught the difference between the unclean and the clean … so that I am profaned among them.” Eternal Life Music is committed to being different. We seek not to move (or please) the crowd, so much as to please Jesus Christ who we serve and love. Jesus said: “Do you love me? … Feed my sheep.” Christian rap is just one of the spoons we use for that purpose.

In all that we do, we will walk in Ezekiel 44:23: “They shall teach my people the difference between the holy and the common, and show them how to distinguish between the unclean and the clean.” Can we do all of this and still keep the music bangin’? Just ask Philippians 4:13.
